Find Your Next Home While Helping At-Risk Youth Find Theirs

By James Anderson, Executive Vice President at Greater Nevada Mortgage

While mortgage rates are helping home buyers finance a home—whether it’s their first home or their dream home—and homeowners refinance their existing mortgage with better payment plans, many children and teens don’t have any home at all in Nevada. Nearly 1,300 youth in our state don’t know where they’ll sleep tonight. That’s why we created our Keys to Greater initiative to partner with organizations dedicated to lowering the numbers of youth experiencing homelessness.

We created Keys to Greater to open doors for youth experiencing homelessness in Nevada by donating a portion of the revenue from every mortgage or refinance to Eddy House where they work with at-risk youth to develop the life and job skills necessary to get back on their feet. To help them in this mission, we donate $100 every time we close a new mortgage or refinance.

We launched Keys to Greater in January 2021 with the goal of raising at least $25,000 for the year. With the help of our amazing community members and high levels of refinancing activity, we are pleased to announce we have surpassed that goal within the first quarter of the year.

On April 12, 2021, we presented a check to Eddy House for $33,700. That’s $8,700 above our minimum donation for the entire year. And it doesn’t stop there. The Keys to Greater program will continue to donate $100 of the revenue from every mortgage or refinance to Eddy House.

Helping Buyers into Homes, and Unlocking Doors for Homeless Youth

The Keys to Greater initiative will help home buyers and homeowners give back by offering security to some of our community’s most vulnerable members. Children and teens make up nearly 25% of Nevada’s homeless population—that’s nearly 1,300 youth experiencing homelessness in our home state at any given moment. To help, Eddy House provides overnight housing and essential services to these youths in Northern Nevada who don’t have access to clothing, food, or shelter. As the central intake and assessment facility for youth experiencing homelessness in northern Nevada, it serves local homeless, runaway and at-risk youth, 24/7, by providing safe overnight opportunities for up to 20 young adults, a five-bed emergency shelter, and a new community living program for 23 youth. Eddy House also offers counseling services, workforce development, life skills groups, healthcare services, and more.

Diaz Dixon, CEO of Eddy House, shared how the Keys to Greater program benefits community members in two different ways:
“This program helps people in one socioeconomic bubble with their homes and gives benefit to individuals who don’t have a home,” Dixon said. “It also gives kids a greater sense of hope that there are people out there that care about them.”

We know this problem won’t be solved by immediate solutions. In addition to the initiative, Greater Nevada Credit Union plans to continue hosting financial literacy classes to teach homeless and at-risk youth how to manage money and help them set up their own savings accounts through the credit union. We, and GNCU, want every community member—no matter their position in life—to have equal opportunities to build a better future.

“We’re honored to have the support of Greater Nevada,” Dixon said. “Partnerships like this help us continue serving at-risk youth throughout our community. Many of our youth don’t have someone in their life to help manage money or open up a savings account. Greater Nevada’s financial literacy programs and donations will help prepare our youth for success in their adult lives and help them achieve their dreams.”

Wally Murray, president and CEO of Greater Nevada, underlined the importance of helping the community through partnerships and collaborations:
“There is no greater way to help someone than to ensure they have a roof over their head and a safe place to live,” Murray said. “That’s why this is an important initiative to all of us at Greater Nevada.”
